Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on a project that is very dear to me: the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made book series. This isn’t just a collection of stories; it’s a 15-book movement designed to change the narrative around neurodiversity.
For too long, the stories told about autism and developmental differences have been focused on "fixing" or "changing" who a child is. But I’ve always believed that our children aren’t broken. They are, as the title says, fearfully and wonderfully made. They see the world through a different lens, move through it with a different rhythm, and communicate with a depth that we are only just beginning to understand.
As the Founder of We Are Autism and a mother who has walked this path, I know the struggles parents face. I know what it’s like when the ABA services end, or worse, when you can’t access them at all. I know the feeling of looking at a bookshelf and not seeing your child: or your culture: reflected in the pages.
That’s why I wrote these 15 books. I wanted to create a resource that celebrates our Jamaican heritage and the global community of color. I wanted children to see characters who look like them, families that feel like theirs, and challenges that they actually recognize. Whether you are in Kingston, New York, or London, these stories are for you. They are tools to help parents, educators, and peers build a bridge of compassion and understanding.
Let’s take a closer look at a few of the stars of this series.
Anxiety is something so many of our children deal with daily, but it can be hard for them to express. In 'Caleb’s Worry Balloon', we use a simple, visual metaphor to help children understand their big feelings.

Caleb shows us how worries can feel like a heavy balloon that grows and grows. Through his story, we learn practical ways to acknowledge those worries and, eventually, let them go. This book is an essential tool for parents who are looking for ways to support their child’s emotional regulation, especially during transitions or new experiences. You can find more tips on managing these moments in our educational articles.
For many neurodivergent kids, the world isn't just seen: it’s felt, tasted, and heard with an intensity that can be both beautiful and overwhelming. 'Samuel Knows the World by Heart' explores the sensory experience of a child who interacts with his environment in a deeply intuitive way.

Samuel doesn’t just walk through a park; he experiences the vibration of the wind and the rhythm of the birds. This book is a love letter to sensory seekers and a guide for those around them to understand that "stimming" or sensory-seeking behaviors are often a way of processing a world that is "too much." It encourages us to stop and look at the world through Samuel’s eyes: there is so much beauty there if we just take the time to notice.
Communication is at the heart of everything we do at We Are Autism. For children who are non-verbal or use alternative communication, the world can sometimes feel like it’s talking at them rather than with them. 'Kayden Has Words Inside' is a powerful story about a boy who has so much to say, even if the words don't come out of his mouth.

Through Kayden’s journey, we see the frustration of being misunderstood, but also the triumph of finding a voice through technology, art, and expression. It’s a reminder to all of us to listen with our hearts, not just our ears. For parents who are navigating life without traditional therapy services, Kayden’s story offers hope and practical inspiration on how to connect with your child on a deeper level.
Writing these books was only the first step. At We Are Autism, we know that a book is a great start, but parents need ongoing, practical support. Many of you have shared that once you leave the structured environment of a clinic or school, you feel like you’re on an island.
We want to change that. Our Building Bridges video series is designed to pick up where the books leave off, offering real-world strategies for daily life. From managing meltdowns to celebrating small wins, we are here for you.
If you’re looking for a community that "gets it," I highly encourage you to check out our support groups. You don’t have to do this alone. Whether you’re looking for advice or just a safe place to vent, our community is built on the same principles as the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made series: compassion, dignity, and unconditional love.
I wanted these books to feel like home. For our Jamaican families, you’ll see the vibrant colors of the island, the warmth of our family structures, and the resilience that defines our culture. For our global community, you’ll see a representation that is often missing from mainstream media.
Diversity isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s our reality. We represent a spectrum of colors, abilities, and backgrounds. By centering these stories on characters of color, we are telling our children that they are seen, they are valued, and they belong.
The 'Fearfully and Wonderfully Made' series is more than just a set of books on a shelf; it’s a way for us to fund the vital work we do at We Are Autism. Every purchase helps us continue to provide resources, host webinars, and advocate for our community.
You can browse the full collection and pick up your copies at our online store. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, or someone who loves someone on the spectrum, these books are a perfect addition to your library.
Thank you for being part of this village. Thank you for believing in our children and for helping us build a world where every child: no matter how they think, move, or speak: is celebrated as the masterpiece they truly are.
With love and gratitude,
